New Generation Peterbilt Blends Best of Old With New
By Editorial Staff
Peterbilt preserves its trademark look while creating a truck that breaks all the rules in new features, fuel economy and aerodynamics.
Peterbilt Models 389 and 388 are the next generation trucks based on the legendary 379 models that served the industry for more than 20 years.
The look has been maintained with small refinements for driver comfort and aerodynamics. The lighting is the most striking difference, both day and night by improving visibility more than 200 percent with bulbs that last 600 percent longer.
The model 389 measures 131 inches and the 388 measures 123 inches. Many of the other features like a two-piece windshield; detachable fenders, an all aluminum huckbolted cab and other features make these models a more improved version of the popular 379.
The sleeper comes in a unibilt low roof version at 36-, 48- and 63-inchs without a double bunk option; or the unibilt ultracab high roof that is available in 48-inches, 63-inches and 70-inch models with a double bunk option.
Two engines, a Caterpillar C15 (435-600 hp), and a Cummins ISC (385-600 hp) are available.
Bridgestone and Michelin tires on steel or aluminum wheels can be specified.
Available transmissions are the Fuller manual in 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, and 18 speeds; Fuller Autoshift at 10, 18 speed; Fuller Ultrashift at 10, 13 speed and Eaton Fuller clutches.
Fifth wheels are available in Holland Fixed, Fontaine Air Slide, Holland Air Slide, Jost Fixed and Jost Air Slide.
The 389 features an all-new, lightweight aluminum hood, a new one-piece aluminum surround with a punched-oval pattern grille and polished aluminum grille bars, polished aluminum fender reinforcements, and a new hood ornament.
The 388 models have many of the same features with a shorter BBC for customers operating in more length-sensitive applications.
The models also feature a lighter weight cooling system, a new fan shroud design and silicone hoses.
The Platinum Level interior features a “soft-touch” padded dash, a GPS navigation system, LED backlit gauges, burl wood grain and a powerful HVAC system for year round comfort.
